Archanes ist ein großes geschäftiges Dorf mitten in der Weinbauregion südlich von Heraklion und Knossos. Das Motto von Archanes: 'Es gibt keine Vergangenheit ohne Zukunft'.

So wird hier viel Wert darauf gelegt, die schönen alten Häuser zu erhalten und zu restaurieren und die minoischen Ausgrabungsstätten zu erschließen aber auch die Infrastruktur auszubauen und den EinwohnerInnen und BesucherInnen kulturell, ökologisch und sozial etwas zu bieten.

Beim EU-Wettbewerb 'Europäisches Dorf 2000' wurde Archanes mit dem 2.Preis ausgezeichnet und wurde dabei Erster in der Kategorie 'Integriertes und nachhaltiges Wachstum von besonderer Qualität'.

Archanes is a big and busy village in the middle of the wine region south of Heraklion and Knossos. Arrchanes' motto: 'There is no past without future.
Therefore one attaches importance to restore the beautiful old buildings and to make accessible the Minoan excavations but as well to develop the infrastructure and to provide inhabitants and visitors with cultural, environmental and social services.
The municipality because of the importance of it’s developmental planning has achieved thesecond place in the competition for the title of European village 2000, but the first place in the competition for the villages that presented completed and sustainable growth of exceptional quality in the competition that was held by the European Union for the «Rural Growth and Upgrade of Villages» and International Union R.E.D (Rural - Environment - Development).
